A Snake
is a Snake
Samuel didn’t sugarcoat it. Rebellion is rebellion. Saul had received clear instructions from God, but instead of obeying completely, he adjusted the command to suit himself. Then he called it obedience. That’s dangerous territory. We humans are remarkably talented at renaming things we don’t want to confront. Disobedience becomes “following my heart.” Compromise becomes “being realistic.” Pride becomes “knowing my worth.” And rebellion gets dressed up until it almost looks respectable. But a snake is still a snake.
David wasn’t perfect, far from it. Yet one major difference between David and Saul was what happened when truth confronted them. Saul defended himself. David eventually fell on his face. God isn’t looking for flawless people. He’s looking for hearts that remain correctable. That’s why repentance is such a gift.
Repentance doesn’t diminish us. It frees us. Rebellion says, “I know better.” Surrender says, “You are King.” Every day, we’re choosing one kingdom or the other. So don’t pet the snake. Don’t rename it. And certainly don’t let it live in the house. Open the door and let the King clean house.
Grounded In Faith
Father, give me a heart that responds quickly when You correct me. Expose rebellion, stubborn-ness, pride, and compromise wherever they hide. Keep me from renaming what You have already called sin. I choose surrender over self-rule. Create in me a tender, teachable heart that loves Your truth and obeys Your voice. You are my King, and Your ways are good. Amen.
