Heroes Rise Higher to Love

I’ve seen it too many times. Good people, even godly people, fall into the trap of comparison. It’s not just out in the world; it’s in the church. We look at someone else’s blessings, their ministry, their relationships, and we start to feel like we’ve been shortchanged. That “it’s not fair” mentality creeps in, and before we know it, envy has taken root. 

But here’s what I’ve learned: comparison is a thief, and envy is its accomplice. They rob us of joy, peace, and the ability to love well. 

Some folks are sitting in pews, watching others live out their calling, and wondering why they’re not seeing the same fruit. Others are actively serving, preaching, and leading but still struggle with spiritual envy. Why? Because somewhere along the way, we started measuring righteousness instead of walking in love. 

Jesus made it simple: Love God. Love people. That’s the whole deal. That’s the formula for Kingdom living. 

But when we start preaching “Love God, be righteous” without the second part—loving people—we miss the heart of Jesus. Righteousness is beautiful when it’s internal, when it’s about surrender and transformation. But when it becomes a measuring stick, it turns into a weapon. We beat ourselves up. We beat others up. And the enemy loves it. 

James warns us about this kind of envy. He calls it earthly, sensual, and devilish. That’s strong language, but it’s true. Spiritual envy creates confusion and opens the door to every evil work. 

So what do we do? We rise higher. We choose love. We stop comparing and start celebrating. We become the goodness someone else needs today.
