TRUE CONFESSION
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:19-23 NKJV
Do you understand what confession is? It is not a ritual of listing your sins to a priest or even to God. Confession is when you verbalize your heart to Him.
Before you’re saved you confess your sins to the Lord and say, “Lord this is my heart, the good and the bad. I’m giving it to You.” After you’re saved, you confess over and over your love toward the Father, and the Father’s love toward you.
By continuing in confession to the Lord, you’re not trying to get re-saved. You’re building intimacy with Him by being transparent with all of your heart – not just the ugly parts that need forgiving, which He already has – you’re confessing your hopes and dreams, too.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus knew what the next 24 hours would bring. He tells the disciples “My heart is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” That’s confession!
He cries out to the Father, confessing what is in His breaking heart:
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Matthew 26:39 NKJV
Jesus confessed His fear. Twice He asked the Father if there was any other way. Then He confessed His love for us by saying He would drink the cup of our suffering because it was the Father’s heart to rescue us.
Jesus lays His heart out there and confesses what’s in it – no shame or embarrassment, no hidden agenda or manipulation. That’s confession. That’s moving closer not only to the Father but to His brothers on earth.
If you’re still confessing your list of sins like your eternal life depends on it, it doesn’t. Confess your heart – your whole heart to the Only One who is worthy to hear it.
Declaration: I confess I love the Lord with all my heart. Because Jesus chose to be the sacrifice for my sin, I go boldly to the throne of grace knowing I can open my heart and freely confess all that is inside me.
