The Cave of Preparation
David’s cave wasn’t a prison. Instead, it was his classroom. When Saul pursued him, David fled to the cave of Adullam, a dark and lonely place. Yet in that hidden season, God was shaping a king. The cave was preparation and not punishment. In obscurity, David learned dependence, humility, and trust. Before he could rule publicly, he had to surrender privately.
Psalm 57:1 NIV captures David’s heart in that moment:
“I will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings until the disaster has passed.” David didn’t cry out for immediate escape. He asked for refuge. He understood that God’s presence was his protection and his preparation. The cave became a sanctuary where David’s character was forged.
Listen, friend. God does His best work in hidden places. The cave is where giants are defeated in your heart before they ever fall on the battlefield. It’s where fear is exchanged for faith and where your identity as a son or daughter is cemented. You may feel forgotten, but Heaven knows your name. The cave is not the end of your story; it’s the beginning of your destiny.
Don’t despise the cave. It’s the place where your crown is being custom-fit. When God hides you, it’s because He’s building something in you that the world cannot see yet. The cave is where kings are made, where warriors are trained, and where worshippers learn to sing in the dark. If you’re in a cave season, you’re in good company. David was there, and Jesus Himself knew the silence of hidden preparation. Your cave is holy ground.

I am being prepared in the hidden place. God is with me. I will trust Him in the cave until the crisis passes. My cave is not my prison—it is my preparation.
