SWEET 16 AND THE LOVE OF GOD
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son
so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NLT
All new beginnings happen because of the love of God. Sixteen (8×2) is the number God uses to identify His love towards us. You witness (2) new beginnings (8) through the love of God (16).
1 Corinthians chapter 13 is known to many as “The Love Chapter.” The King James boys tried to come up with another word for the God-giving, laying down your life, kind of love. They used the word “charity.”
In our modern language, when we say “charity,” we tend to think of soup kitchens and Santa Claus ringing a bell in front of a department store. But “charity” in the King James means the “God kind of love.” We have to be able to distinguish that, because in English, we use “love” for every kind of affection, even when completely different. We talk about how much we “love” our dog, “love” our chicken fried steaks, and “love” our wives. Understanding this problem, they used the word “charity,” meaning the kind of love that comes from God and causes us to give away everything.
This is the season for giving, and 1 John 3:16-18 gives an even deeper understanding of what love is. We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So, we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
God is love and He is a giver, and since we are created in His image, we must be givers of love, too.
Declaration: God’s love is greater than anything in my life. I love the Lord, and my heart rejoices that He loves me. My eyes are open to see new ways to show the love of God by giving to those around me. I am abundantly blessed and want to be a blessing to others.
