HARD THINGS DONE WELL
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV
I learned the value of hard work at a very early age. I also learned the consequences of being idle. I was expected to grow, to learn, and to do hard things.
I was driving a tractor by the time I was about eight years old. It didn’t matter that I was young; I had to learn how to do straight lines. I learned how to do straight lines not by looking at the plow behind me but by looking at a fence post way off. My stepdaddy taught me that. He said, “Troy, if you’re always looking at the ground or at what’s behind you, you’re always going to get off course. Just put your eyes on something way ahead and just start heading that away.”
I can remember it was a big deal for daddy to come and to actually judge my lines to see if they were straight or not. I’d be so proud whenever he said, “Those are pretty straight lines, Troy.”
People used to pride themselves in their straight lines, especially these Texas people. In summertime, when it was so hot, all the crops would come up, and it was time for the harvest. It was a big deal. It meant you were either lazy or you were not according to the attention to detail that you had and the straightness of your lines. Friends, if we can do that for our neighbors in rural Johnson County, Texas, how much more should we be able to do that for the Lord who sees all?
Declaration: I have fixed my eyes on Jesus because He is the author and finisher of my faith. He will guide me in the ways I should go. Every task I am given, I will do it with excellence because I am His, I am made in His image, and I do things according to the way He has shown me. My eyes are open to see ways to help and to serve all those around me.
