Last week we talked about how Mary thought the angel Gabriel had the wrong address.

We also talked about how she embraced the plan God had for her life despite the fact it could cost not only her reputation, but her life. Mary had a next-level heart.
And if Mary had a next-level heart, Joseph had the honor of a king. He could have publicly humiliated Mary and even had her stoned for being pregnant with a child that wasn’t his. He could have thrown a galactic fit, but he didn’t. He sought to quietly divorce her and save her life. Then an angel showed up and told him Mary wasn’t lying. Like Mary, Joseph got with the program.
Like I said, he had the honor of a king. Do you know why? Because Joseph should have been the rightful King and Mary was also of royal blood – fit to be a queen.
MATTHEW’S GENEALOGY
Matthew 1:1-16 – The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4 Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 5 Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6 and Jesse begot David the king.David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa. 8 Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah. 9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon, and Amon begot Josiah. 11 Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon.12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 14 Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. 15 Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
It’s important you understand that Jesus was in the line of David through Solomon. That was the kingly line.
That means Jesus was not only a “Son of David,” his daddy Joseph was also a “Son of David.”
But Pastor Troy, what about the genealogy in Luke. It says it’s the bloodline of Joseph, but it’s not the same as the genealogy in Matthew. This is a contradiction.
LUKE’S GENEALOGY
In Luke 3:23, it gives the bloodline of the Lord Jesus Christ beginning at Joseph then backing up all the way to Adam – 77 generations.
Luke 3:23-38 – Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli… the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz…34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham… the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
77 is the number of the Church. 77 generations from Adam to Jesus who starts the church. Look at verse 38. What does it call Adam?
Luke 3:38 ≠ …the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
While Luke’s genealogy says “Joseph” and traces Jesus’ lineage back to David’s son Nathan, THIS IS NOT A CONTRADICTION AND THIS IS NOT JOSEPH’S GENEALOGY. It’s Mary’s.
Daughters could not inherit anything from their parents, and it seems Mary is their only child. Because of this, her husband, Joseph, is legally listed in the place of inheritance and his name is on the genealogy.
THE BIG RIPOFF – Joseph should have been the king of Israel and Mary was also of royal blood.
Nobody knows Joseph or Mary – it traces back from both Mary and Joseph that they were both royalty and nobody knew who they were.
WHO WAS THE KING AT THE TIME JESUS WAS BORN?Herod He wasn’t even a Jew.He was an Edomite, a son of Esau.Esau cared so little for his father’s inheritance and the blessing of God that he sold his birthright to his brother, Jacob, for a bowl of beans.The Bible says God literally hated Esau for this.
Malachi 1:2b-3 – “Yet Jacob I have loved; 3 But Esau I have hated, and laid waste his mountains and his heritage for the jackals of the wilderness.”
Esau rejected the Lord and His righteous ways. His descendants did not receive the promise and are NOT JEWS.
HOW DOES AN EDOMITE – SOMEONE WHO’SE NOT EVEN A JEW – BECOME THE KING WHILE THE TRUE SON OF DAVID IS AN UNKNOWN CARPENTER IN A BACKWATER TOWN?
Nothing was as it should be. IDENTITY THEFT
THINGS WERE SO BAD, THAT EVEN JOHN THE BAPTIST WAS GETTING RIPPED OFF.
Luke 1:5-13 – There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.8 So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
John was the son of Zacharias, high priest in the division of Abijah. They were of the priestly line of Levi.
The priesthood is passed down through the bloodline. John should have been the high priest.
LOOK AT THIS CONVERSATION BETWEEN HIM AND THE PHARISEES.
John 1:19 – Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
THE HIGH PRIESTS DID NOT ASK JOHN WHO HE WAS BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T KNOW. THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHO HE WAS – THE RIGHTFUL HIGH PRIEST.
THEY ASKED JOHN WHO HE WAS TO SEE IF JOHN KNEW.
John was another victim of identity theft but his is a story for another time.
IDENTITY THEFT: WHEN GOD’S ORIGINAL PLAN FOR WHO YOU ARE IS STOLEN BY THE ENEMY.
Mary and Joseph – even John in later years – are people heaven celebrates that the world doesn’t.
Jesus was born through people who should have been royalty, but because things were so confused, backward and upside down, they were some of the poorest, most insignificant people in the eyes of man.
You are somebody heaven celebrates even if the world has no idea who you are, heaven knows who you are.
Like Mary, it’s very important for you and I to line up our mouths, minds and hearts with the heart of the King and what God says – just like Mary said, “Let it be as the word of the Lord has spoken unto me.
1 Peter 2:9 (NIV) – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Revelation 1:6 –…and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
